Structure of Ephesians 2:1-10

Structure of the Passage:

  1. Verses 1-3 — Your previous state

    1. You Gentiles were dead in your transgressions and sin (v. 1)

      1. In which things (transgressions and sins) you used to live (v. 2a)

        1. When you followed the ways of this world (v. 2b)

        2. And the ruler of the kingdom of the air (v. 2c)

          1. the spirit who is at work in those who are disobedient (v. 2d)

            1. All of us also lived among them (the disobedient), and we gratified the cravings of our flesh and followed its desires and thoughts (v. 3a)

            2. Like the rest (the disobedient), we were by nature deserving of wrath (v. 3b)

  2. Verses 4-10 — Your new state because of what God has done (“But God…” in verse 4)

    1. But God who is rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us (v 4)

      1. He made us alive with Christ, even while we were dead in our sin (v 5)

      2. He raised us up with Christ and seated us in the heavenly realms (v 6)

        1. In order that he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. (v 7)

          1. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, not of yourselves, it is a gift from God, so that no one can boast (vv 8-9)

          2. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God has prepared in advance for us to do (v 10)
