Read Genesis 22:1-19

Contemplate: This test of Abraham’s faith alludes to the coming of Jesus. Abraham’s utter trust in God’s promises and his plan is the foundation for the gospel. We are called to trust God just as thoroughly. The allusions to Jesus are striking. Notice that Isaac is Abraham’s “only son, whom you love” (Gen. 22:2). Abraham is asked to sacrifice his only son. They travel for three days while Abraham agonizes. Abraham assures Isaac that “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son” (Gen. 22:8). And after God halts Abraham from slaying Isaac, the Lord provides a ram to die instead. The amount of faith displayed by Abraham is remarkable, and the allusions to the substitutionary sacrifice of Jesus, the only Son, are stark.

Pray: Give thanks to God for being willing to sacrifice his only Son so that you could live. Praise him for his marvelous plan to redeem you by actually paying the price for sin.
